NICOLE WOLF

Web Developer. Frontend Developer / UI Designer at 8mylez.
Instagram: @joeel56. Paderborn, Germany

Nicole, tell about yourself? How did you become a developer? How you describe your development skills and current interests?

Nicole Wolf: I started coding at 14. My big brother inspired me to learn coding. Then he was in university learning coding and this inspired me. He showed me what is possible to do as a Web Developer and also he motivated me to start coding. I've always been very interested in technology. In my 13-14, I created fantasy graphics in Photoshop and also loved to cut videos in Sony Vegas.

In the beginning, I was learning html + css with a little bit jQuery but after some years I started to learn Javascript & PHP too. I also learned the basics of C# and Ruby on Rails but I noticed that I prefer Web Development the most. Currently I'm working with Smarty, Symfony 3, jQuery, VueJs, Ext. Js, Less and SCSS.

My main hobbies are fitness, dancing, coding, motorcycling, traveling and also making videos about my trips.

On Instagram, you describe yourself as a Frontend Developer / UI Designer: tell about your everyday routines? What does your pattern of professional problem solving look like?

Nicole Wolf: Actually I'm more Developer than Designer. 80% of my time I'm coding stuff. But when I design something, then I use Invision Studio! It's a great tool for creating UI concepts and also a great choice for animations.

My approach to problem solving looks like this:
1. Realize the problem.
2. Create an idea to solve the problem. / Create a concept to work around the problem.
3. Code the bugfix.
4. Test it on all devices and with all possibilities. At this step, I also like to ask my colleagues to test the site so that I can see what they do and where they click.
5. If it works then I create a new issue branch and a merge request. If it doesn't work I repeat the steps.

Your Instagram account shows that you have a great life-work balance. How do you manage this?

Nicole Wolf: On Instagram you can show a lot that doesn't correspond to the reality. Some people write me, for example, that I am only working. That's not true. I would say that I have a great time management. I plan every hour of my day because it's so important to me. Also, I focus on work the whole week. Monday through Saturday I'm consistently working or doing fitness and sleeping. On Saturday and Sunday I focus on meeting my boyfriend, family or friends and also try to relax a bit after the week. It's true that I don't sleep that much on the week but It's okay for me. I know that It's not that healthy but my body feels great so I'm doing this.

How does your process of professional upgrade look like?

Nicole Wolf: Always learning. Always try new things and not go into the position that doesn't work. It all works, you just have to try multiple solutions.

What are your top places to work? Do you have personal life hacks to work productively?

Nicole Wolf: Best place for me is actually at work. I also love to work at home or in the coffee store. But I'm the most productive when I'm in the office. Little life hacks: don't use your phone while working, play piano music in the background and turn your mail programs off, so nobody can disturb you!

You and your brother are both developers, right? How does your communications look like – are there lots of tech jokes and professional talks? Tell us about 'pair programming' and the 'wolf-hood' which you've mentioned on Instagram?

Nicole Wolf: Well, my big brother is also my boss, so we have to talk everyday. It's pretty easy to work with my brothers. They are both quiet people and always take time to help me with my problems. Of course sometimes we have some discussions but in the end of the day we love each other and support each other. I work with my little brother the most. We do projects together where he does the backend and I create the frontend. We are a good team that's why I call us the 'wolf-hood' as our last name is Wolf.

What are your favorite geek punchlines, jokes and specific tech fun with IT friends and colleagues?

Nicole Wolf: I'm always looking for some good programmer jokes. One of the funniest profiles on instagram is @javascript.js But colleagues and me we also love to make fun of each other on how bad the code is sometimes.

Can you share your favorite geeky flirt lines and tell something interesting or funny about the relationships with a tech person?

Nicole Wolf: I'm not in a relationship with a tech person. My boyfriend doesn't code and that's totally great. It is enough for me if he is interested that I can code and not code himself.
